Lock and Key

By: Sarah Dessen

Ruby can take care of herself.

She's used to counting on no one and answering to no-
body. But all of that changes when her mother vanishes
and Ruby is sent to live with her older sister, Cora. Now
Ruby's got her own room in a fablous new house, she's going
to private school, and - for the first time - feeling as if she has a
future. Plus, there's the adorable and sweet boy next door, Nate
Everything should be perfect. So why is Ruby so wary? And why
is Nate keeping her at a distance? Ruby soon comes to realize
that sometimes, in order to save yourself, you've got ta reach out
to someone else.

Charcters: Ruby, the independt girl. She thinks she has it all figured out and she doesn't like feeling week or dependt, and she doesn't want anyone to depend on her. Cora, the older sister. She has always protected Ruby from their achoolic and always drunk mother and always will. She is trying to get pregnant. Jamie, the sweet brother-in-law. He wants to do everything to make up for Cora and Ruby's distorted past. Harriet, the freak. She is Ruby's employer, a caffine addict, and undepdent. She wants help from no one. Nate, the sweet boy next door. Or is he? He has a way of smoothing out all the bumps and trying to make everything perfect. He wants Ruby to open up to him and he wants to help her through it all.

Story/Journy: I must say the beginning was incridebly boring because it was a lot of flashbacks and Ruby was very closed up. She didn't except or expect help. She pushed everyone away, even the reader. But towards the middlish she opened up and so did Nate which made it intresting. I finished it today and almost cried once and did cry another time. The first time was during standerdized tests so I had to keep it together.

Overall Thoughts: I didn't like Ruby much in the beginning but I learned to love her just as I learned to love Nate. It was very good and I think I may read again skipping over parts I thought were excidengly boring.

Rating: Like a Star @ heaven Like a Star @ heaven Like a Star @ heaven Like a Star @ heaven Would've gotten five except the extremly boring ending.
